Overview.

Protecting the foothills of the Himalayas from plastic pollution

The city of Dehradun is housed at the foothills of the great Himalayan mountain ranges. The challenging terrain and remoteness of villages meant that no waste management systems had previously been established. Over the last few decades, its formerly-pristine environment has been devastated by plastic pollution - contaminating forests, ravines, and valleys.

Pavitra Parvat catalyses the collection and ethical processing of low-value, soft plastic that would have otherwise been dumped in landfills or polluted the Himalayan ecosystem. Various plastics are now collected, providing financial opportunities for waste workers in the area, and recyclable plastics are sent for recycling - reducing the need for virgin material use.
