Overview.

Protecting the Keralan coast from plastic pollution by establishing a network of Material Recovery Facilities across the state

Kerala is known as a tourist destination, with its mountainous terrain and Arabian Sea shoreline. The state is home to tea, coffee and spice plantations as well as an abundance of wildlife. Kerala is urbanizing rapidly, but over 50% of the population lives across hundreds of small villages. Formal waste management systems are practically non-existent due to limited resources and the remote nature of these areas, and plastic is usually burnt or dumped into the environment - eventually finding its way into the ocean.

Project Hara Kal - a collaboration between rePurpose Global and Green Worms - mobilizes a local women's group participate in the project by funding training and employment, and increasing their earning opportunities. The project creates a brand new waste management supply chain that collects and ethically processes neglected low-value plastic that would otherwise have been destined for our oceans. Your contributions help create infrastructure for sorting, segregating, and transporting plastic - including household collections that bring waste management services to around 100,000 households for the very first time.
