At this year’s edition of the Pet Sustainability Coalition's Impact Unleashed, Svanika Balasubramanian, co-founder and CEO of rePurpose Global, spoke about the urgency of the plastic waste crisis and highlighted the need for brands to take immediate action.
The Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) is a non-profit collective of leading brands in the pet industry that are committed to fostering sustainability and environmental impact within the ecosystem. Every year, PSC hosts Impact Unleashed - an event with a keen focus on sustainability implementation - featuring speeches and workshops for pet brands to build sustainability efforts.
In the United States alone, the pet food industry is responsible for the production of over 300 million pounds of plastic waste each year. Most of the packaging is composed of non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle plastic. Almost all of this plastic packaging is thrown away as waste, rather than recycled. Aware of their contribution to the issue and their responsibility to address it, PSC is committed to developing the pet industry's sustainability and environmental consciousness.
As the world’s leading plastic action platform, rePurpose Global has partnered with over 25 brands in the pet food and pet care industry across the United States, Canada, and New Zealand - a collaboration that has enabled the recovery of over 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste (the equivalent of 1 billion plastic bags by weight) from nature.
Not only that, but our impact projects around the world have supported livelihood opportunities for around 2,000 waste workers. The environmental benefits of funding plastic action are clear, but it is also apparent that the consumers of tomorrow are looking for deeper commitments and intersectional initiatives from brands.
For brands in the pet industry, taking concrete action and communicating it accurately and effectively can support brand building. Over 73% of today’s GenZ consumers are willing to pay more for a product that is sustainable and environmentally responsible. Moreover, sustainable practices and values can bolster a brand’s customer loyalty, with 91% of consumers willing to migrate to more sustainable brands.
By joining hands with rePurpose Global, our partners in the pet food industry are making a tangible, verified, and ongoing contribution to action on plastic pollution. To watch Svanika’s talk on why this audacious action is needed, and how brands can make a difference, click the video above!
