Solving EPR for Complex Beauty Packaging

How True Botanicals Achieved Seamless EPR Compliance—Fast

True Botanicals is a luxurious, consciously crafted skincare brand that offers clean, sustainable, and clinically proven products free of over 5,000 harmful chemicals. With hundreds of SKUs, intricate packaging needs, and limited internal bandwidth to interpret all reporting nuances, True Botanicals turned to rePurpose Global to simplify Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) compliance—and gained a long-term data advantage in the process.

Packaging Data Centralization + EPR Compliance

The Challenge

Beauty brands face major challenges in managing packaging data for EPR. SKUs often contain multiple components: droppers, jars, cartons, inserts, and more, each with unique material types, suppliers, and recyclability profiles. The complexity grows with seasonal kits, bundles, gift-with-purchase promos, and tester units. The True Botanicals team was left wrangling fragmented data spread across procurement files, finance systems, and supplier portals—all while trying to interpret dense, state-specific EPR regulations to guide exact data needs. With the reporting deadline approaching, True Botanicals approached rePurpose Global for help.

The Solution

rePurpose Global met True Botanicals where they were and evaluated all available data, even across siloed systems with inconsistent formatting. We were able to advise the True Botanicals team on which data truly mattered and what could be left out, helping them to avoid “boiling the ocean” even as data from suppliers remained difficult to interpret. As their team put it, "the process was painless because the team was so knowledgeable regarding how to interpret the data provided.”

Notably, rePurpose was able to bring clarity and strategic guidance to multiple nuanced situations, from how to handle in-store tester units and kit bundling rules to determining when tertiary packaging needed to be included. Our in-house sustainability team helped advise on local recyclability information for complex packaging formats and package colors specific to True Botanicals.  Because recyclability is influenced by factors like packaging format and color—and many of these nuances vary by local infrastructure—this support ensured that True Botanicals’ EPR reporting was accurate, defensible, and aligned with how materials are actually processed in the real world.

By centralizing all packaging, sales, and supplier data into a single, streamlined system, we gave True Botanicals a foundation they can build on—making future reporting faster, easier, and more cost-effective. What started as a last-minute compliance need for Oregon – which we delivered on despite tight timelines! – became a long-term solution for navigating future states’ EPR laws with confidence.

Results

In under two weeks, rePurpose Global helped True Botanicals meet Oregon’s EPR deadline without the stress, cost, or delays that come with last-minute compliance efforts. Results included:

  • Time saved: Eliminated the need to hire or outsource (~$40,000–$120,000/year) by streamlining data consolidation and supplier inputs. As the brand shared, “we reported on time, and the process was painless."
  • Money saved: Saved hundreds to thousands of dollars in Oregon alone by identifying exemptions and optimizing material weights.
  • Penalties avoided: Filed a complete, audit-ready report ahead of deadline—minimizing the risk of $25,000/day fines or costly corrections.
  • Long-term benefit: Built a centralized, scalable system to manage EPR reporting, recyclability claims, and sustainability storytelling across states.
