Convening the Innovation Alliance for a Global Plastics Treaty

Partner: The Ocean Cleanup

Context & Challenge:

  • The escalating plastic pollution crisis requires a comprehensive global response, but innovators and grassroots organizations often lack representation in Multilateral Environmental Agreement (MEA) negotiations.
  • The challenge was to create a platform that amplifies these voices and ensures their inclusion in the development of a global plastics treaty.

Our Intervention:

  • rePurpose Outcomes Lab together with The Ocean Cleanup convened the Innovation Alliance for a Global Plastics Treaty (IAGPT) to address this gap. We brought together over 100 innovator organizations from across the plastic pollution lifecycle, including reuse, refill, alternative materials, recycling, waste management, and legacy cleanup. The alliance serves as a bridge between policy & innovation ecosystems.
  • We developed a common vision statement and detailed out enabling conditions to amplify the needs of innovators in the global policy discourse. Additionally, we created text proposals on topics like innovative financing. To bridge the gap between policy and innovators, we hosted webinars and events, engaging key stakeholders such as the Nairobi Group of Friends, Alliance of Small Island Developing States, INC Chair, International Chamber of Commerce, The World Bank, IFC, NOSCA etc.

Key Outcomes:

  • The IAGPT successfully convened over 100 innovator organizations, creating a unified voice advocating for an pragmatic and inclusive global plastics treaty. This collaboration elevated the voices of innovators and grassroots organizations, ensuring their inclusion in the policy-making process. The coalition enhanced its impact through influential advocacy at major international platforms like the UN Global Plastics Treaty Negotiations.
